Addressing the Funding Gap from Inflation - Letter to Ontario Party Leaders

Categories: Advocacy

Dear Ontario Party Leaders,

I am writing to you on behalf of ÎÛÎÛÂþ» Trustees to urge all parties to address critical funding shortfalls impacting our schools and communities. It is paramount that we prioritize public education in 2025 and beyond, not just for Toronto, but for the future of our entire province.

Right now, there is an estimated $1,500 shortfall in per student provincial funding when adjusted for inflation. According to figures that have been adjusted for inflation, school boards relied on an average of $14,700 per student over the 2018-19 school year. However, for the 2024-25 school year, boards will have to make do with about $13,200. This sizeable funding gap continues to exacerbate existing needs and create new challenges.

As Canada’s largest school board, the ÎÛÎÛÂþ» serves approximately 239,000 students in 579 schools. Despite our best efforts, we are facing significant funding shortfalls that hinder our ability to meet student needs. We are calling on party leaders to increase the amount of per student provincial funding by $1,500 to address the current shortfall when the 2025-26 core education funding is announced.

As a system, we are struggling to provide essential resources, support services, and programs that are crucial for student success. Without adequate funding, our ability to offer a well-rounded education may be compromised. This current situation is unsustainable and unfair to students, staff, and families.

The ÎÛÎÛÂþ» is experiencing a $38.5 million shortfall to support students with special education needs and a $10.9 million shortfall to support student and staff mental health, safety, and well-being. These shortfalls are not just numbers - they represent real students who are not receiving the support they need to succeed in school and life.

When Toronto families head to the polls this month, we will all cast a vote for a better future. By increasing per student funding to meet inflation-adjusted levels, we can help ensure that every Ontario student has access to the resources they need. Our students are the future, and it is time we afford them the tomorrow they deserve with proper public education funding that sets them up for success.

The ÎÛÎÛÂþ» appreciates ongoing advocacy from the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association as boards across the province experience similar challenges because of inflation. We all hope to see a strong commitment to public education in the remaining days of the campaign and when a new government is formed.

As always, I would be happy to continue discussing this important issue with you if your time permits.

Sincerely,

Neethan Shan
