Categories: News

Students at Anson Park PS get hands on learning about maple tree tapping.

Anson Park PS is running an exciting school-wide initiative that combines experiential learning with Indigenous education. This project engages students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 in tapping Maple Trees right in their schoolyard to produce maple syrup.

An Outdoor Educator from is guiding students through the process. Students have the unique opportunity to learn about the science and cultural significance of maple tree tapping.

Trees are being tapped from February 5 to April 11. As it is collected, the sap will be filtered and boiled. This initiative culminates on April 16 with a school-wide Pancake Day when the whole school samples the maple syrup.

This project is about more than just making maple syrup – it fosters respect and understanding of Indigenous knowledge and traditions. By tapping Maple Trees and making maple syrup, students learn about the cultural, historical and ecological significance of this traditional activity.
